The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Wednesday picked up two suspects alleged to have sold fake gold dust to a dealer.
The dealer, Isaac Amanfo, says the two, Yaw Asante and Obeng Nyairku, are part of a four-man team he transacted business with under the company name New Age Mining.
He said the whole transaction came to $52,000 for 2 kg of gold dust, but he agreed to pay half of the amount upon verification of the product by his US partners.
Amanfo told Joy News preliminary tests on the dust by the Geological Survey Department showed it was pure gold but after running a second test at the Precious Minerals Marketing Company it showed otherwise.
He said he became alarmed and reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrests of the two. He said he suspects some officials at the Geological Survey Department are in the pay packets of the fraudsters.
The Police CID declined to comment on the issue. They however say the police are pursuing the other two men involved in the transaction.
