The police administration is advising car owners to buy car tracking devices as part of measures to fight car snatching in the country. The advice comes in a wake of increases in car snatching cases especially in Accra.A victim told Joy News he was followed from Accra Mall to his house at Ashongman Estate before his car was snatched by three weapon-wielding men.Police have recently arrested members of a car snatching syndicate who operate across borders.According to Deputy Regional Police Commander Chirstian Nyewonu, the syndicate specialized in four wheel drives, especially Toyota Prado, Hilux and highlanders. He said the syndicate will park their car at a location and will be watching the cars that ply a particular route. If they trace a car of their taste they will then follow those cars at a distance to the residence of the owners before snatching it from them.He said once the car is snatched, the number plate is changed and driven straight to the Aflao border where a member of the syndicate receives it, uses unapproved routes and drives it across the country.Nyewornu said if car owners buy tracking devices, which he said are not too expensive, it will be easier for the police to locate exactly where the car is at a point in time and make an arrest. He named one Isaac Anim as a member of the syndicate that has been arrested. Another member who is based in Aflao has also been picked up, he noted.Until their arrest, Nyewornu said the syndicate, immediately after snatching a car will pass it over in a form of a relay until it is taken outside the country. He advised car owners not to struggle with people who hi-jack their cars.
