Police lifts ban on demonstrations

The Ghana Police has lifted the ban placed on demonstrations during the hearing of the presidential election petition. According to the police, they now have adequate numbers to provide protection to political parties and organisations willing to organize public events including demonstrations. Acting Director of Police Public Affairs, DSP Cephas Arthur told Joy News Friday, all organizations intending to organize any special event or demonstrations to respect the public order act and notify the police five days before the event. The Police for the past eight months banned demonstrations in the country because most of its personnel were on stand-by during the election petition hearing. Just last Monday, they secured a court order to stop the Progressive Peoples Party from embarking on an anti-corruption demonstration, saying their men were still not back to post. But DSP Cephas Arthur says they now have their men back at post and are ready to offer protection The police PRO said the police will never prevent any citizen from exercising his or her constitutional rights. DSP Cephas Arthur thanked the general public for their cooperation during the ban.
