The police at Offinso in the Ashanti Region have filed a motion at the District Magistrate Court seeking an order to prevent the installation of a rival chief at Akomadan on June 19.
According to the police, the Aduana Clan was preparing to install Nana Akwasi Konadu Krapia II as the Akomadanhene, even though there was a substantive chief in the town, and felt that if the action was carried out it could plunge the area into chaos.
The police indicated that their action was not an attempt to meddle in chieftaincy but to save lives and property.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Alex Yartey-Tawiah, the Offinso District Police Commander, will move the court on June 14 for the matter to be heard.
The motion has been served on all the nine respondents, namely, Nana Krapia; Nana Oppong, Manhyia Atipimhene; Nana Kwadwo Klasi, Akwantufohene; Nana Kwaku Fosu, Benkumhene; Nana Kwaku Afful, Gyasehene; Opanin Kwaku Atta, Kontire Abusuapanin; Nana Twum Barima, Nkonwasoafohene; Opanin Yaw Asante, Abusuapanin of the Aduana Clan, and Opanin Kwasi Nyarko, a member of the family.
In the affidavit in support of the motion, the police said they had information that the Aduana Clan wanted to install a rival chief at Akomadan on June 19, 2007, although police investigations had proved that there was a substantive chief in the town.
The police also said that they were aware of a protracted chieftaincy dispute at Akomadan which was pending before the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
According to the affidavit, until the matter before the Asantehene was determined, no faction or family had the right to install another chief, since it was likely to plunge the area into chaos.
It said the situation at Akomadan at the moment was volatile and could explode should the police remain unconcerned.
