A political Science lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is advising the newly elected national officers of the New Patriotic Party to play the role of the “unbiased referee” as the party look forward to winning power from the National Democratic Congress.
According to Kwesi Amakye, the greatest challenge of the previous officers was the perception of a divided front with each bloc accused of supporting one presidential candidate or another.
In an interview with Citi News, Mr Amakye said some past executives publicly campaigned for individuals vying for the flag-bearer position of the party and that largely created division and disunity in the party.
Whilst that behavior might not have been the official position of the party, the leadership he noted did little to demystify that perception.
He is hoping the Jake Obetsebi Lamptey-led administration will be seen to be fair and neutral and hold in check “errant” colleagues who through their actions, declare support for any of the groups or personalities within the party.
Mr. Amakye described the new leadership as very experienced and urged them to as a matter of urgency come up with "measures to address rifts" within the party.
The new leadership, he intimated is a "winning team", with each individual representing the true aspirations of the party.
