President John Mahama has assured fishermen in the Central Region of improved living conditions as he works to grow the fishing industry.
He made this promise when he addressed fishermen at the Elmina beach as part of his ‘Touching lives tour’.
Joy News correspondent Richard Kwadwo Nyarko reported President Mahama as claiming that his government has resolved to put measures in place to grow the fishing industry.
It is for this reason that government has decided to maintain subsidy on premix fuel to reduce the burden of the fishermen, the president indicated.
President Mahama said government has adopted a number of technologies to help sustain the country's sea fish stock. They include the introduction of a Vessel Information Tracking Systems (VITS) and fish finding devices.
He said the VITS will enable government to monitor the activities of fishermen in unauthorised areas.
President Mahama said government has begun the distribution of some 1000 outboard motors to fishermen at a discount.
The Elmina Fish Processing Plant which is 98 percent complete, according to the president when commissioned will improve fishing activities and storage.
He said he will impress on the Fisheries Ministry to create of a budget which will assist fish mongers.
