Mohammed Anas bagged a goal on debut as Maritzburg United thumped Chippa United 3-0 in the Absa Premiership on Tuesday night.
The Ghanaian, who penned a three-year deal earlier this month, netted a 19th minute opener, with Nhlanhla Vilakazi and Sheldon van Wyk scoring after the break at Harry Gwala Stadium.
It was a slow start to the match for Chippa who struggled to find their rhythm and gave away possession cheaply.
Maritzburg made the most of the away side’s poor start and almost opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute when Ashley Hartog met a Thamsanqa Mkhize cross, but the former's header sailed just over the target.
Maritzburg’s first shot on target came in the 12th minute when Mkhize fired a 24-yard free-kick goalwards, but debutant Fatau Dauda was on hand to make a fantastic fingertip save.
The home team continued to press forward and were rewarded with the opening goal when Anas headed home a Khumbulani Banda cross.
Things went from bad to worse for Chippa when Joseph Molangoane had to leave the field injured and was replaced by Dumisani Zwane in the 22nd minute.
Chippa, though, were not discouraged and almost levelled matters a couple minutes later when David Zulu struck the woodwork with a thunderous shot.
The away team continued to dominate the rest of the half, but could not find an equalising goal before the half-time whistle.
Five minutes into the second half Chippa’s attempted comeback was made all that more difficult when Maritzburg doubled their lead.
Anas turned provider in the 50th minute as he played Vilakazi through on goal who produced a sublime finish to make it 2-0.
United made sure of all three points in the 85th minute thanks to a goal from Van Wyk.
