The National Democratic Congress government is still committed to finding the killers of the late Ya-Na Yakubu Andani II, Propaganda Secretary Richard Quarshiga has said. The governing NDC's electoral campaign promise to find the killers faced a setback following a ruling by an Accra Fast Track High Court on Tuesday which acquitted and discharged 15 persons charged with the murder of the late king. The ruling evoked extremely contrasting emotions with the Abudu youth whose 15 kinsmen were freed by the courts took the Yendi streets in wild jubilation. Moments later it was the turn of the Andani youth who were least enthused with the court’s ruling and became highly destructive. The Regional office of the NDC in Tamale was torched whilst equipment in the constituency office of the NDC were also reduced to ashes. The youth burnt tires and blocked roads, chanting, swearing, and demanding justice arguing the ruling was a travesty of justice. One of them died in the process, under controversial circumstances, with the youth accusing the military of being behind the death. The youth claims government has reneged on its promise to find the killers of Ya-Na, insisting the Mills-led administration must redeem itself, or the president should not step foot in Tamale. The Northern Regional executives of the party have also issued an ultimatum to the government to find the killers in two weeks or they will resign en masse. In reaction, the Propaganda Secretary of the NDC Richard Quarshiga told Joy News government is equally disappointed that the killers of Ya-Na Yakubu Andani are walking free but urged the aggrieved Andani youth to be calm. He said government fully appreciates the pain and concern of the youth but added the Attorney General will take steps to ensure justice is served. He defended the party’s decision to use the Ya-Na’s murder as a campaign issue, saying it is not a “light matter” and deserves serious attention.
