Alhaji Iddrisu Bature has predicted the imminent break-away of former President Jerry Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings from the ruling National Democratic Congress.
Bature, Managing Editor of the Al-Hajj newspaper, says the Rwalingses will announce their official break-away from the party they founded on June 4, this year, in the Volta region.
The occasion, he said, will be at the 33rd anniversary celebration of the June 4 uprising to be held in the Volta region.
Alhaji Bature who was commenting on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday, in reaction to the latest criticism by Mr. Rawlings on the Mills-led administration, therefore called on the leadership of the NDC to strategize to contain the coming ‘bombshell’.
He said the Rawlingses have succeeded in cowing the government and national executives of the NDC to succumb to their whims and caprices.
According to him, the party and government have suddenly gone ‘deaf and dumb’ even when it is crystal clear that the former first couple want to wreck the NDC barely seven months to the December elections.
Former President Rawlings while addressing supporters at a ceremony to mark the 30th anniversary of the formation of the 31st December Women’s Movement Tuesday, described some leading members of the NDC as 'traitors' whom he said have side-stepped the key principles of the party.
Mr. Rawlings noted that until the ‘traitor’ was eliminated, it would be difficult to redeem the NDC and restore it to its core values.
But Alhaji Bature blamed the national executives of the NDC who he said has given the Rawlingses the leeway to execute plans to make President John Mills lose the election.
He noted that the party leadership has failed to face up to the reality that Mr. Rawlings is no more a ‘giant ‘in the NDC and respond appropriately to the criticisms but rather delude themselves with a possible reconciliation with the party founder.
Bature could not fathom why the party leadership failed to act after Mr. Rawlings had warned that the "inevitable will happen” if his wife did not win the party's Sunyani congress.
He claimed that the ceaseless denigration of the government and the current leadership of the NDC is a manifestation of the 'inevitable' Mr. Rawlings warned would happen.
He is therefore urging the government and the NDC to respond appropriately to the Rawlingses to win public confidence in their ability to govern the country independently.
