…One Ghanaian killed in attack
Former Ghanaian President, Jerry John Rawlings has expressed sadness at Wednesday’s attack on a United Nations Guest House in Kabul, Afghanistan which killed twelve including a Ghanaian Field Officer, Lawrence Mefful, and four of his colleagues.The former President condemned the attack on the UN Guest House, describing it as an attack against humanity.“I wish to express my deepest condolences to the families and colleagues of the deceased.“This must be a difficult time for United Nations employees and their families and I pray that they gather enough strength to overcome the sadness that has engulfed their mission.“They play a very important role for mankind, maintaining peace and order in very volatile regions and their efforts are appreciated by all well-meaning people across the world,” former President Rawlings said.The late Lawrence Mefful served in the Ghana Armed Forces from 1990 to 2007 before joining the UN then in Nepal.He was later re-assigned to Afghanistan as a Security Officer. He earlier served as a Staff Officer in the Department of Peace-Keeping Operations in New York prior to leaving the Ghana Armed Forces.Until his death he was the Deputy Field Security Coordination Officer of the Central Region of Afghanistan, which includes Kabul.Source: Office of Former President Rawlings
