The court wrangling between Alfred Woyome and Raymond Archer over the ownership structure of The Enquirer newspaper has taken an interesting twist with a lawyer accusing Archer of fraud.
Archer is alleged to have forged documents transferring the 51 per cent shares of Woyome into his name and thereby making him the sole owner of the newspaper under the business name Focal Media.
Mr. George Selassie Babanawo, lawyer for Woyome and in whose name the 51 per cent shares of the newspaper was allegedly registered, told Joy News’ Evans Mensah his signature may have been scanned and put on a fraudulent document which Raymond Archer has been brandishing.
He has therefore petitioned the Inspector General of Police to investigate the circumstances under which his signature was forged and Woyome’s shares transferred fraudulently to Archer.
Explaining how he held the 51 per cent shares for Woyome, the lawyer said the businessman approached him to accept ownership of Focal Media until such a time that he would be free to publicly acknowledge ownership of the paper.
He (Woyome) was then performing duties at the Austrian Consulate which prohibited him from engaging in any private business.
According to him, Focal Media was registered with him as the Director, Secretary and shareholder with 51 per cent shares held in trust for Woyome.
He was shocked to learn of documents, purported to have been signed by him, transferring the shares to people he did not know - families of Raymond Archer.
He stated emphatically those documents were forged and his signature scanned in the whole 'illegal' transfer.
Babanawo stated he is worried by the turn of events and prayed the IGP will investigate the matter.
According to him, there has never been a meeting of stakeholders after the company was formed in 2005 and he even had to buy copies of the newspaper as and when he wanted them to read.
He said the newspaper has not raked in any benefit for Woyome but was not sure if the businessman would continue running the business.
The ownership of the company is currently before a commercial court pending adjudication.
