Shamima Muslim, a communication member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that the government's aim to reconstitute tribunals across the country is not an attempt to bring back the era of the PNDC or a military regime.
She reassured the public that the reintroduction of the tribunals is solely intended to enhance the participation of local communities in the delivery of justice, and there should be no cause for alarm or fear.
The incoming Attorney General (AG) has announced the reintroduction of tribunals within the judicial system as a means to help alleviate the heavy workload on the country’s traditional courts.
According to the constitution, the establishment of regional tribunals is designed to allow local communities to engage in the justice process, thereby reducing the burden on national courts.
However, in 2002, the then-NPP government abolished various community and circuit tribunals.
The NDC now seeks to amend this and reintroduce those tribunals.
