Security analyst Dr Adam Bonaa has cautioned the president against any plans to remove Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

Speaking to Evans Mensah on JoyNews’ PM Express, Bonaa emphasized that such a move could lead to chaos.

“Internationally, when nations are going into elections, the convention is to maintain the structure of the security service.

"Former President Trump attempted it in the United States, but it was shot down by the Senate. We are not so different, and it will create chaos, so the president must desist from it,” Dr Bonaa warned.

Adding his voice to the issue, Senior Vice President of Imani Africa, Kofi Bentil, said, "There are some busybodies with nefarious intent. And the problem is that we are allowing them to go on."

“This stuff should be investigated and we should find the journalists who published the news first and find out where they got it from. And somebody has to answer questions.”

The private legal practitioner said no one should be allowed to spread such information to cause panic in an election year. 

“We just have a very stable system so some of these things, we just treat them with the contempt they deserve but indeed they can cause all kinds of disruptions in the authority system. 

“Ghana is blessed, once in a while we get people that IGP Dampare, and then we find a way to mess it up. Not all of us want that so when these things happen, the rest of us who believe that we want things good for this country rise.

“When this was happening my shock was that you didn't hear the imminent voices in this country speaking. The IGP was left to defend himself alone.

"If this country wants good people in office and to do their work and do it well, we must find a way of protecting them if they're doing their job well, and when such furious allegations arise, the system must protect them. And not leave them to protect them.”

On Monday, July 1, the Ghana Police Service refuted media reports suggesting Dr George Akuffo Dampare had been asked to proceed on leave.

“We urge the public to disregard this fake news and treat it with the contempt it deserves,” stated Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs.

The statement reiterated that the IGP remains committed to his duty of leading the Police as mandated by President Nana Akufo-Addo.
