A well drilled Retired Footballers FC side last Saturday beat a Radio Sports Presenters’ team 3-2 in a gruelling friendly encounter at the Sekondi Gyandu Park.
The friendly match was organized by the Association of Retired Footballers to raise funds to support some of its members who have become old, sick and destitute and are finding it difficult to make ends meet.
Mr. Edward Acquah, Chairman of the Association and a one time prolific goal scorer of the national team, the Black Stars performed the kick-off.
He made a passionate appeal for assistance for members of the Association who were formerly the country’s soccer heroes and worked hard to place Ghana on the world soccer map.
Mr Acquah urged the National Sports Council and the corporate bodies to work out a package to support retired footballers who out of patriotism had sacrificed their talents to make Ghana a great soccer nation.
Stephen Baidoo scored an own goal in the 10th minute to give the Radio Presenters a relief that spurred them on to increase the scores in the 25th minute through Ekow Ghansa of Twin-City Radio.
Good Old Kofi Abbrey of the Retired footballers reduced the tally to 2-1 when he expertly took a spot-kick to beat Kweku Sagoe of ROK FM who was in posts for the Sports Presenters.
Stephen Baidoo who played a great game made amends by scoring two goals in the 60th and 70th minutes for the Retired Footballers to carry the day.
Robert Nyarko, Abraham Afedzie, Nketsia Yawson, Joe Ghartey Junior. Peter Akromah, Albert Nyarko, Naana Eshum, Ben Hayford and Joe Buckman and Ekow Daniels lined up for the Retired Footballers FC.
The Sports Presenters FC fielded Umar Salifu of Twin City FM, Albert Osei-Wusu of Goodnews FM, Kofi Edu of Kyzz FM and Nii Ankrah of Melody FM.
The others included Kofi Mbeah of ROK FM (Captain), Benjamin Quansah and Emmanuel Ewuah of Goodnews FM.
