Credible information reaching footy-ghana.com indicates that German coach Klaus Toppmoller is being earmarked as the new technical director of the senior national team, the Black Stars.
According to our unimpeachable sources, Toppmoller has been contacted by third parties representing officials of the Ghana Football Association with a view to taking over the technical bench of the Black Stars.
Footy-ghana.com understands that should the move happen, the 62-year-old Toppmoller will take all technical decisions regarding the team, leaving current Black Stars head coach Kwasi Appiah as a deputy in effect.
Interestingly, the GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi told GTV Stage Africa host Jerry Kwame Ayensu on Friday that unless Appiah asks for any technical help, the former Black Stars captain will remain in full charge of the national team, since he has almost qualified the Black Stars for next year’s World Cup.
Appiah has guided the Black Stars to one game away from qualification for the 2014 World Cup, but footy-ghana.com understands that he has been unable to win the support of some top GFA officials who still want a foreign coach in charge of the team.
Toppmoller came into prominence when he coached an Eintracht Frankfurt side containing Anthony Yeboah and Augustine Okocha, and he has coached other Bundesliga clubs like Hamburg, Bochum and Bayer Leverkusen, which he led to the 2002 UEFA Champions League final.
He was also in charge of the Georgia national team; a position he left in 2008. Toppmoller was linked with the Nigeria job before losing out to Swede Lars Lagerback just before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
