Propaganda Secretary of the National Democratic Congress has issued a stern warning to detractors to stay off the party’s National Delegates Congress. Richard Quashigah in an interview with Myjoyonline.com stated that the party has “intelligence report” suggesting that “detractors” or “people outside the NDC” are planning to cause commotion during the July Congress. According to him, the detractors are planning to wear ‘T’-Shirts of one contestant or another and throw stones to create confusion at the Sunyani Coronation Park, venue for the Congress. “From intelligence information gathered, (there are) people outside the NDC who would want to see the elections go haywire, they want it to end up in a very chaotic manner,” he said. “We just want to advise them that they should tell those who are engaging them to come and create confusion at our congress that they are withdrawing, because the security measures we have put in place will not warrant any such attempt by any group. “No act of illegality will be perpetrated at our congress,” he warned. Functionaries within the NDC, including the Central Regional Propaganda Secretary Allotey Jacobs had claimed to have information that people within, including the the Rawlingses, were planning to cause chaos if the Congress did not go their way. But Richard Quashigah has dismissed the assertion. He argued “no well meaning member of our party will want to create violence at our Congress,” adding, “any individual, group of people that have intentions to destroy the congress will have themselves to blame.” The Propaganda Secretary also allayed fears of rigging, insisting the Congress will be conducted in the most transparent manner. “It is going to be so transparent that the issue of rigging will not come up at all,” he assured. Richard Quashigah said voting materials and all other logistics needed for successful election are in place. Three thousand delegates from ten regions of Ghana are expected to participate in the Congress at the Sunyani Coronation Park from July 8 to 10, 2011. Meanwhile, officials of the Electoral Commission say they are ready for the July 8-10 delegates Congress. Head of Public Affairs at the EC, Christian Owusu Parry told Myjoyonline.com their role is only supervisory and they are ready to ensure a smooth Congress.
