The Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has questioned the efforts of the Akufo-Addo led Government towards the people in rural and urban areas of the Ashanti region.

In a debate on the extent of development in the Region, Sammy Gyamfi noted that although the New Patriotic Party (NPP) touts the region as its stronghold, over the years, the NDC has proven that it represents their interest better through the various developmental projects that the party has undertaken in the region.

He cited projects like "the K3 water project at Konongo, Kumewu and Kwahu which gives thousands of people water in the area. We [the NDC] came and completed the Mampong water projects in the area which started under Kuffour, Mills and eventually Mahama for the benefits of the people in the Mampong enclave".

"Even though we have been losing elections in this Region, we have been prioritising the interest and the welfare of the people in this region".

He pleaded to the people of the region for a second chance for the Mahama-led NDC to ensure sustained development for the Ashanti region.

"That is why this time, we are pleading with them to look at the government, party and the people who have their interest at heart over the years," he added

He emphasized that the NPP are complacent in their dealings in the Ashanti region because they have taken the loyalty and support of the people for granted.

Stressing on John Mahama and the NDC's efforts towards the region, Sammy Gyamfi called out the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) change in stance on key policies on Okada, the ban on salvaged vehicles among others as reminiscent of a party that is losing power. 

He further described the NPP as wavering and inconsistent in its own policies, particularly in the wake of the launch of the NDC manifesto.

After the NDC flagbearer announced that he would legalise Okada's if voted into power, the NPP-led Government subsequently have stated that they had been in consultations with major stakeholders over the legalisation of Okada since 2019.

He cited the NPP’s recent views on tricycles and salvage vehicles also as evidence of the party's desperation.

"When John Mahama mooted this idea of legalising Okada in 2018, they insulted him and called him names including [the] riders of commercial motorcycles. They described them as a nuisance on our roads. They said legalising it will promote crime and recklessness on our roads. The Majority leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu said it was not possible," he stated.
