Mr Sekou Nkrumah, son of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government was elite focused and out of touch with the poor. He observed that the NPP government’s policies and programmes only enhanced the comfort of the rich and window dressed packages for the poor. Mr Nkrumah was addressing a National Democratic Congress (NDC) Youth rally at Anloga at the weekend. He said the government had used about 50 million dollars to put up a presidential palace when many people were without basic amenities such as water. Mr Nkrumah said if two million dollars each of that amount had been distributed among 25 Senior High schools, those schools could be transformed into model ones to give quality training to many Ghanaians to become assets to themselves and the state. “That money could train brilliant students from poor homes in their education but not for the pleasure of one person,” he said. He said in his assessment, the NDC was currently the only party passionately principled on doing things to benefit the poor just as the Convention Peoples Party did under his late father Dr Kwame Nkrumah. “It is not surprising the NDC just like the CPP draws its support from the rural and poorer constituencies because of its apparent zeal for social justice, freedom and equality,” Mr Nkrumah said. Ghana, he stated, needed a people centred party and a president as the NDC’s Professor Evans Ata Mills, to rule the country. He said this was why he joined the NDC to win power for the poor and the marginalized. Former President Jerry John Rawlings asked the people of the Volta Region to maintain their faith in the NDC, saying other regions including the Central and Western Regions, had realized the massive failure of the NPP and were rushing back to the NDC. Other speakers included Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, Mr Victor Gbeho, Squadron Leader Clend Sowu (rtd), Mr Haruna Iddrisu, Mr Eddie Annan and Mr Modestus Ahiable, all executive members of the party.
