Charles Nii Armah Jnr popularly known as Shatta Wale has been adjudged Artiste of the Year at the 2014 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards which came off at the Accra International Conference Centre Saturday night.
He beat Castro, Kwabena Kwabena, Sonnie Badu, Sarkodie, Samini, and Guru to win the award. The controversial musician, who did not attend the awards, also won Reggae/Dancehall Song Of The Year, and the Vodafone Most Popular Song Of The Year for his song Dancehall King.
Last year, Shatta Wale vented his anger at Charter House, organizers of the awards, accusing them of robbery after losing out on the Reggae Dance Hall Song of the Year award to Kaakie.
A source close to the organizers explained to Myjoyonline.com that Shatta Wale refused to show up for the awards because of a rift over his performance fee for the awards night.
The source said when the artiste was approached by the organizers to perform at the awards, he charged them GHc70,000 as performance fee and several attempts to beat down the price proved futile.
Ghana's fastest rapper Sarkodie walked away with the most awards on the night. He won four awards - Hip Hop Song Of The Year, Hiplife/Hip Hop Artiste Of The Year, Best Rapper Of The Year, and Album Of The Year.
'Tonga' hit singer Joey B won New Artiste Of The Year. He walked away with a brand new Hyundai i10.
Other winners on the night included Kwabena Kwabena, who won Highlife Artiste Of The Year, and Best Collaboration Of The Year. Sonnie Badu who walked away with the Gospel Artiste Of The Year, and Best Male Vocal Performance Of The Year.
The show which was billed to start at 8 started after 10pm but the venue was filled to capacity.
Apart from the awards that were presented on the night, the event witnessed some impressive performances from several chart topping acts including OJ, Sarkodie, Castro, Sonnie Badu, Bisa Kdei, Cindy Thompson, Kwadee, Daasebre Dwamena, Iyanya, Jupiter, Stonebwoy, Samini, Kwabena Kwabena, and Davido.
