The General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie has accused government of using the Food and Drugs Authority as a vehicle to witch-hunt Tobinco Pharmaceuticals and other companies perceived to have sympathies for the party.
He said the ongoing spat between the Pharmaceutical giants and FDA is only calculated at collapsing the Pharmacy.
The FDA is accusing Tobinco of importing fake G-Sunate plus drugs into the country. It has proceeded to lock up warehouses storing some of the alleged fake drugs.
Officials of Tobinco have vehemently dismissed the FDA allegations that the drugs it imported into the country were fake, even though they admitted the drugs were yet to be clinically tested on humans or be registered by the FDA.
The Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) has arrested and charged the Tobinco boss, Samuel Tobin for obstructing official duties by personnel of the FDA and cited a recent scuffle between officials of the FDA and workers of the Tobinco over a purported attempt to lock up warehouses .
The case is still under investigations.
But the NPP General Secretary Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie is accusing the government of using the FDA to collapse Tobinco.
According to him, several other companies are suspected to be involved in the same offence the FDA is accusing Tobinco of but because those companies are suspected to be linked to government, they have been left untouched by the FDA.
"There are several companies that I don't want to mention for now that are all doing the same thing but because people believe that they have links with the NDC, they have not been touched," he alleged in an interview with Citi FM.
He said the government had in the past hounded the companies percieved to be affiliated to the NPP, adding, "It will not surprise me that the NDC knowing how they behave will do anything and everything to harm people who are not on their side."
He said the practice is seriously affecting local businesses in the country.
