Six illegal SIM box operators have been arrested by a joint squad comprising the Criminal Investigations Department of the Police Service in collaboration with the NCA Joint Anti-Fraud Taskforce and telecos.
They were arrested in Aslyum down, Abossey Okai and Nima, all in the Greater Accra Region during an operation to track down illegal SIM box operators on Thursday morning.
They were caught in the act, allegedly manipulating machines to terminate incoming foreign calls.
A SIM box server capable of holding at least two thousand SIM cards belonging to a Nigerian National resident in Ghana, Ogunsanwo Olawale was retrieved.
Head of CID, COP Prosper Agblor revealed that the country has lost about forty million cedis during the six month period the suspects have been operating.
He said a total of nine SIM box machines the police retrieved from the suspects were loaded with SIM cards belonging to the Glo mobile.
“The machines were active and operating when the police arrived,” he noted.
Also recovered from the suspects were “three heavy duty UPS, six heavy duty batteries and a number of antennas”.
He warned the police would not spare persons engaged in such unscrupulous activities that amount to “economic sabotage” of the state.
