The Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) in Cape Coast, last week Wednesday, arrested a ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist, Kojo Afful, at Brofoyedur, a suburb in the Cape Coast Metropolis for printing close to two thousand T-shirts depicting pictures of Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential candidate and that of Ato Amponsah Dadzie, NPP parliamentary candidate for Cape Coast.
The Chronicle gathered that the BNI upon a tip off, on Wednesday, raided Afful’s home to search for the “Skirt and Blouse” campaign T-shirts in which an undisclosed number of T-shirts were taken away to the BNI office.
Afful, who is a former Polling Station Chairman for the densely populated Brofoyedur area, was interrogated by the BNI as to why he had printed those T-shirts.
The BNI officers also stormed a Printing house at Petrol, a few meters away from Afful’s residence, where the T-shirts were being printed. The officers ordered the Printers to stop work, and they seized the T-shirts that had already been printed.
Afful is an ardent supporter of Member of Parliament for Cape Coast, Ms. Christine Churcher who is known to wield support and also command respect among the youth in the area. He is constructing a Youth Centre at a popular park at Brofoyedur as a way of inculcating respect and self-esteem in the youth of the area.
Afful, who is also known as ‘Friends of Jesus Club’, confirmed the story to The Chronicle when this reporter sniffed around to check the authenticity of the report that came to our office in Cape Coast.
He told the paper that he was released from BNI custody at around 5pm on Wednesday and he was asked to report the next day.
In the course of the interview with the paper, numerous calls were made to Afful’s cell phone to enquire about his arrest. Afful told the paper that a meeting was scheduled among top NPP brass on Saturday to solve the problem.
An attempt to get the BNI to verify the arrest proved futile as none of them was prepared to make any comment on the issue.
The skirt and blouse concept of voting is one in which supporters of a party decide to support their Presidential candidate and vote for the opposition parliamentary candidate or support their parliamentary candidate and vote against their Presidential candidate.
In 2004, the skirt and blouse concept emanated from Cape Coast when a section of the NPP executives fell out with Ms Churcher and decided to vote for Mr. Ebo Barton Odro, NDC 2004 Cape Coast candidate and President John Agyekum Kufuor, which split the party into two factions.
James Biney, a veteran newspaper vendor had his news stand shit-bombed on suspicion that he was behind the skirt and blouse concept because he was then supporting Edwin Godwin Buckman, who challenged Ms Churcher in the primary.
Since then, the party has been in turmoil with constituency elections being challenged by some aggrieved old executives.
