Some stranded football fans at El-wak Stadium in Accra are bent on staging a demonstration against the Deputy Minister of Sports, Nii Nortey Dua over what they described as "insulting" comments he made on Joy FM Wednesday.
Mr Nortey Dua had advised the stranded football fans, some of who he said had bid relatives farewell and were hoping to travel to South Africa for the World Cup and thus found it embarrassing to return home, to find accommodation in Accra and go home after the tournament pretending they were in South Africa.
"Such people should go and hire proper place of accommodation and stay so that after the tournament they can go back and give the impression that they were in South Africa," he had counseled on Joy FM.
Some of the stranded supporters Joy News' Ebenezer Opoku Boahene spoke to were stunned by the comment and accused the minister of inflaming passions instead of addressing their plight.
Even though they did not want to be named because they claimed the leadership of the ruling National Democratic Congress had asked them not to speak to the media, they were hopeful the government would fly them to South Africa.
But they warned that whether they are flown to South Africa or not they would demonstrate against the Deputy Minister of Sports for his “unfortunate” statement.
Meanwhile a group of unnamed philanthropists have decided to “put their heads together” to fly a total of 420 fans to South Africa.
Mr Yaw Boateng Gyan, NDC Deputy Secretary, speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story said that 340 persons will depart for South Africa Wednesday night, and an additional 80 will join them Thursday.
He said the South African High Commission in Ghana should partly be blamed for the problem. He said the commission’s delay in issuing visas opened the floodgates to some people to scheme their way into the government’s lists.
Mr Boateng Gyan also condemned the Deputy Minister’s statement, saying “I don’t think that is right…that is not the best way to solve the problem."
