The Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the government of over pricing costs of projects.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said the over-pricing is mainly due to “the single source procurement method, which has become the procurement method of choice for this government.”

Presenting what the NPP calls ‘The true State of the Nation’s Address’, Akufo-Addo listed SADA, GYEEDA, KARPOWER, SMARTYS, AMERI, ENI, ETC, as examples of over-pricing costs of projects.

The presentation which took place at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra, Monday was to critically digest the State of the Nation Address presented by President John Dramani Mahama in Parliament last Thursday.

Nana Addo said some achievements enumerated by the President in his Address did not corroborate with the reality on the ground.

“For instance, he mentioned works on the Drobo-Sampa road, as he did last year. At the time President Kufuor was leaving, the 40-kilometre stretch from Drobo to Suma had been done, leaving 7 kilometers from Suma through Sampa to the border. For over 7 years, the 7km stretch has not been completed,” he indicated.

An asphalt road

The Atebubu- Kwame Danso road, which the President said is on course, has long been abandoned by the contractor, G.N. Ghanem, according to the NPP.

Akufo-Addo said the NPP’s investment between 2001- 2009 far exceeds that of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) since 2009. He cited the increase of road network under Kufuor’s time from 37,321 km to 67,291 km.

He said although the NDC had 10 times more money, it has been able to make less than 6,000km difference.

The NPP alleged that the average cost of a 1-kilometre asphaltic road which cost $480,000 costs $1.5 million under the NDC government.

And this according the party is another example to prove that the government over-prices the costs of projects.

The President has however reacted to the NPP’s criticism. President Mahama indicated in a Facebook post that it would be wrong for the NPP to try to “minimize our achievements and the depth of Ghana’s transformation in the last three years.”
