Space center for Ghana soon

The Deputy Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Mustapha Ahmed has announced Ghana will have a space centre by May this year. He said Ghana is collaborating with South Africa, United States and Nigeria in the establishment of the space station. The center is being sited at Kuntenase in the Eastern Region and will be run by the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission. The Deputy Minister made the announcement at the second edition of “The Mathelete”, an inter-tertiary mathematics competition held at the Meagasa Mathematics Academy in Accra. In the competition, six tertiary institutions presented solutions to some social, environmental, health and security problems using mathematical equations. The competing institutions included the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Ghana (UG), University for Development Studies (UDS), University of Cape Coast (UCC), All Nations University and Accra Polytechnic. KNUST won the competition for the second consecutive time and the University of Ghana and UDS placed second and third respectively. Professor Sitsofe Anku, founder and Executive Director of Meagasa Mathematics Academy and the President of Ghana Mathematics Society said the principles and methods of solving problems come from mathematics as it ensures efficiency in ICT, Physics, Science and technology however, stakeholders and policy makers ignore math as a solution to the problems Ghana is facing. The competition, which attracted reps from the Ghana Planetarium, the Advanced Information Technology Institute (AITI) as well as renowned mathematicians and engineers, was organized by the Ghana Mathematics Society in collaboration with Dream Weavers Consult.
