Member of Parliament for the Awutu Senya East Constituency Hawa Koomson has admitted to firing a gun at a voters' registration centre in the constituency.
According to the Special Development Initiatives Minister, she took the firearm - which she refused to identify - to the registration centre to protect herself.
'None of my men had guns on them when we got to the center. I fired the shots myself,' she said on Adom News.
Earlier Monday, officials of the Electoral Commission closed down the Step to Christ registration center in the Awutu Senya East constituency after gun-wielding men stormed the premises.
Eyewitnesses say, the men numbering at least 15 arrived at the centre around 8 am and tried to sack some prospective voters.
Parliamentary Candidate on the ticket of the NDC Naa Koryoo Okunor accused the sitting MP of perpetuating the act.
Although Miss Hawa Koomson admitted to the act, she denied allegations that the men she visited the center with were armed.
'I'm a Member of Parliament, I need to protect myself. It was at dawn, my police escort had not started work yet. So that is a mechanism I have adopted in his absence,' she said.
She further explained that she went to the location because she heard her opponent had bused people from other places to the registration centre.
Meanwhile, police say four persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.
