The CEO of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation and a former Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, has revealed that President Mills promised to make him the Foreign Affairs Minister but to his surprise the promise failed to materialise.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana programme on Thursday May 19, the NDC presidential hopeful said he is not peeved by the failed promise but feels sorry for President Mills because his administration is being sabotaged by a cabal at the Presidency.
He added that the decision to appoint another person to the Foreign Affairs Ministry promised him by President Mills was the handiwork of the cabal who threatened and intimidated the President not to appoint him (Spio-Garbrah) to the position.
Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah mentioned some members of a group known as the Fante Confederacy in the NDC such as Mr Ato Ahwoi, chairman of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, and Mr Totobi Quakye, chairman of the National Communications Authority as those undermining him and the authority of the President.
“...on Thursday 8th January 2009 when he (President Mills) had just been sworn in as President...I sat on the couch with him and he said 'Ekwow I would like you to be my Foreign Affairs Minister.' So the President duly sworn in offered me a ministerial appointment.
“I am not angry at all but I feel sorry for the President, in the sense that if he wants to give a job to anybody - it happened to me in this case, because there are other people who were promised various positions that didn’t they get it - and not being able to do it because somebody comes to threaten and intimidate him (Mills) that 'if you appoint this man, I and my brothers won’t work with you'...that is the problem as far as the presidency of Ghana is concerned”.
Dr Spio-Garbrah also said his decision to challenge President Mills in the upcoming Sunyani Congress is because many of the electorates who voted for President Mills in 2006 to be flagbearer of the party are disappointed by the President’s performance in office.
According to him, it is not against the constitution of the party to contest a sitting President for the flagbearership slot of the party.
The former communications minister under ex President Rawlings said he is saddened that the NDC is not using its vast network of knowledge and wisdom to unite the party and to govern.
He however added that he is ready to meet President Mills and any other member of the government if only it would bring peace and unity into the NDC party.
