An apprentice sprayer, Mohammed Adam Awal, who was caught with 14 grammes of dried leaves and six cell phones during the New Patriotic Party Congress in Legon last year was on Wednesday sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by a Circuit Court in Accra.
Awal who pleaded not guilty to possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority was, however, found guilty at the end of the trial.
The facts as presented by Chief Inspector R.K. Dzogbeti were that on December 22, last year, at about 1:00 pm a team of Police Personnel were detailed to patrol the University of Ghana campus during the NPP congress.
The police patrol team was informed that Awal and Ali Gariba now a convict were stealing mobile phones from supporters of NPP aspirants.
The Police therefore mounted surveillance and arrested Awal and Gariba and escorted them to the Legon Police Station.
A searched on them found that Awal and Gariba had six mobile phones and 14 grammes of Indian hemp in their pockets.
Awal told the Police that the stuff was given to him by a friend. However, Awal failed to lead the Police to the said friend.
