The Northern Ghana Food Security Resilience Project (NGFRP) review workshop has ended in Accra.
Dubbed “The project close-out and lessons learnt workshop”, it was a platform for stakeholders to share their experiences in the 20 months duration of the project.
The NGFRP, a European Union-funded project, was implemented by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA Ghana) at Bole, Sawlaffula, Kalba: in the Central Gonja and West Gonja districts in the Northern Region and Wa Municipal, Wa East and Nadowli districts of the Upper West Region.
The project, which was also supported with 10 per cent matching fund from ADRA UK, aimed at reducing food security for 10,000 resource poor and vulnerable small-scale farmers.
It hoped to achieve its objective through capacity building of client fanners, agricultural inputs support and market linkages.
Welcoming stakeholders to the review workshop, Dr. William Y.K. Brown, Country Director of ADRA Ghana, said that when in 2008, the global economic crisis made the poor vulnerable, the EU considered a way out to help make the vulnerable fanners more resilient to such outcomes.
“Out of this initiative, ADRA UK was given a grant to implement a food security project in the northern part of Ghana,” he said.
Dr. Brown said ADRA Ghana partnered with ADRA U.K to implement the NGFRP project in seven districts in the Northern and Upper West regions.
He said the total cost of the project was 1.3 million Euros with a 10 per cent match from ADRA U.K, adding “ADRA Ghana enjoyed good collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to implement many impactful food security projects in the catchment areas”.
Dr. Brown said the intervention would increase household staple food production, reduce post harvest losses, improve capacity of farmer groups in marketing agro-based products, and improve organisational, business management and life skills.
He said during the project, over 8, 500 farmers were trained in various topics with 73, 188kg of improved seeds being distributed to the fanners.
Dr. Brown said 7,887 acres of land were cultivated while 1092.5 tonnes of fertilisers was distributed to farmers which enabled them to pay back about 1,000 tonnes of their produce to establish a revolving fund for the farmers.
He said from the project, many of the farmers had adopted new technology in agriculture, increased their yields, increased household food security and opened bank accounts.
Mr. Kurt Cornelis, Head of Operations of the EU Delegation said the EU support to tackle soaring food prices and increasing hunger in the world was contained in the 2009 instrument named “EURO I billion Food Facility”.
It provided support to 50 vulnerable developing countries to help them cope with worsening food situation, caused by volatile food prices by improving availability of and access to food.
“Under the instrument, Ghana benefitted from three facility projects totalling nearly 5,710,00 euro,” Mr. Cornelis said, adding that the NGFSRP was equally set out to improve food security of 10,000 resource poor and vulnerable small scale rural farmer household in about 130 communities.
