The two nurses groups which embarked on strike this month have resolved to end their strike and resume work tomorrow.

Nurses at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital declared an indefinite strike on Thursday, October 1, 2015 over unpaid salaries. Seven thousand nurses and midwives also boycotted work this week over similar concerns.

The nurses were determined to get their salaries which have been in arrears for years paid before returning to work.

They accused government of bad faith after numerous agreements brokered with government were breached by government.

But President of the Ghana Registered Nurses Association Kwaku Asante Krobea announced the decision to call of the strike today.

The decision was influenced by sympathy for their patients and proven commitment by government, he explained.

Kwaku Asante said the Association takes cognisance of the fact that, continuation of the strike action embarked upon by the nurses and midwives for five days running, has negatively affected health system delivery.

The impact of the strike is likely to compound the negative effect of the current average nurse-patient ratio of 1:22, he observed.

“In consideration of the fact that funds have been released to pay the psychiatric nurses and the Controller and Account General’s Department working assiduously to pay the Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives their withheld salaries in the month of October 2015, the leadership of the GRNA announces the positive response to the appeal made to the striking nurses and midwives to suspend the strike action and return to work,” he said.

Asante Krobea however emphasised that the calling off of the strike “is to be considered as a retreat in a purposeful strike action and not an end to all the issues”.
