Authorities of the Tema General Hospital have expressed regret about circumstances that resulted in the death of a woman who bled excessively after delivery because she was allegedly unattended to, when she reported at the hospital. The woman reportedly died because there were no doctors to attend to her at the Tema General Hospital when she arrived from a maternity home at Afienya bleeding. Her relatives had to drive her across the motorway to 37 Military Hospital in Accra, where she eventually died on October 31, 2011. Pediatric Surgeon Dr. Samuel Osei Nketia revealed the story to the public after investigating the matter when he came across the four-day old baby of the deceased who had been operated upon at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. A reliable source at the Tema General Hospital told Adom News, authorities cannot establish when the incident happened and what the situation was but they suspect it was lack of doctors at the Maternity Unit that rendered nurses on duty helpless. The source claims “authorities have started investigations to find out what exactly happened.” On the other hand, Dr. Nketia says the death of the woman could have been avoided if there had been doctors at the Tema General Hospital. “It pains me to know that a whole hospital like the Tema General Hospital has no doctors to attend to emergency cases. Health Ministry and all stakeholders should endeavour to solve this problem.” Meanwhile, the baby has been left in the care of relatives and is said to be doing well.
