Tension is brewing in the North Gonja District of the Savannah Region as residents of two villages take sides in a romantic feud between two men from their fold.
The woman in the middle of the feud (name withheld) is a head porter (Kayayo) who returned from Kumasi to her village only to dump her husband for her new lover.
The woman's husband a resident of Singa while her boyfriend lives in Tari No.1 and as news of her decision to leave her husband spread, the people of Singa rose to salvage the dignity of a member the village.
However, residents of Tari No.1 are also unwilling to see a member of their village deprived of a woman who has willingly chose to share his hearth.
The scene is set for a clash.
District Chief Executive (DCE) of North Gonja, Adam Elliasu, explained that the Kayayo had been married to her husband for many years, however, since her return from Kumasi recently, she has ignored her husband and has instead been spending time with her lover at Tari No.1.
And while she was at Singa one day some youth of the town moved to preserve the sanctity of the matrimonial home of their colleague.
They seized the trespassing woman’s belongings and beat up a man who offered to take her on a motorbike to her boyfriend at Tari No. 1.
They also seized the motorbike.
In retaliation, a group of men in Tari No.1 also attacked.
They also beat up a resident of Singa and seized his bike.
Sensing an escalation of the feud, the DCE has prevailed on both parties to release the seized motorbikes to him for onward return to their rightful owners with the help of the police.
This has not happened but the Savannah Regional Police Commander DCOP, Enoch Adutwum Bediako, is hopeful calm will be restored to the two villages.
According to him, the fight would have escalated if not for the intervention of a joint taskforce of police and military personnel stationed in the North Gonja District.
DCOP Bediako also urged the two communities to remain calm as the nation battles the deadly coronavirus disease.
