In spite of the strict ultimatum given by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the National Democratic Congress to its members who have filed to contest as independent candidates, the Member of Parliament for Lower Manya Krobo constituency on Sunday launched his campaign to contest as an independent candidate.
Although, NDC party executives from National and regional secretariats refused to grace the occasion, scores of NDC supporters and sympathizers thronged the premises of the Odumase-Krobo Catholic Parish Hall to witness the campaign launch of the MP, Michael Teye-Nyaunu.
The well-attended event was characterized by a float through the principal streets of Odumase amid brass band music and NDC songs. The followers told Journalists they will vote for their MP because they have come to the realization that the party wants to do away with him for ‘speaking his mind’ on issues affecting the party.
“Our MP is an honest and generous man, the party cannot impose anybody on us, they bribed the delegates to vote against him’’ but they cannot decide for us,’’ a section of them lamented.
His posters have been splashed all over the constituency, bearing the colours of the NDC with a scale of balance as his symbol.
Michael Teye Nyaunu has on several media platforms challenged the credibility of the constituency primary held some few months ago.
He has accused the party executives and other heavyweights at the presidency of sponsoring the deputy eastern regional minister, Ebenezer Okletey-Teye Larbi to unseat him in the constituency election.
The firebrand lawmaker lost to the deputy regional minister in a keenly contested constituency primary which was characterized by acrimony and political squabbles.
With the parish hall filed to its capacity, the outspoken Teye-Nyaunu, usual of him did not mince words, descended heavily on his party for imposing a ‘stranger’ on the constituents.
The party has given them up to a week to rescind their decision or get kicked out of the party.
According to him the deputy minister has no moral rights to have contested him in the primary since in the year’s 2004 and 2008 he neglected the Lower Manya constituency and contested in Oforikrom in the Ashanti region.
‘’Teye Larbi thinks we Krobo’s are fools, if he had you at heart he wouldn’t have gone to Kumasi to contest’’.
He charged the people of the area to vote massively against the deputy minister and the NPP parliamentary candidate, Dedo Dufie-Kusi, the senior sister of NPP’s Emmanuel Agyarko.
Mr.Teye-Nyaunu, a second deputy speaker of ECOWAS parliament described the NPP’s candidate as a “liar”. He stated that because she (Dedo) wants to deceive the constituents to vote for her, she has adopted a Krobo name ‘Dedo’.
“My investigations reveal that Dedo has adopted that name for you to accept her as a true Krobo but she is not, because all documents including her passports do not bear the name Dedo. She is Dufie Agarko-Kusi”, Mr. Nyaunu stated.
On the issue of his long stay in office as a parliamentarian, the avowed follower of the NDC founder, Flt.Lt Jerry John Rawlings said ‘’the longer you stay in parliament the more experienced you become’’.
‘’Look at E.T Mensah, John Tia Akologo,Cletus Avorka and the rest, they are all my mates in parliament, don’t they have experience?’’ the MP quizzed.
Mr.Teye-Nyaunu counseled his supporters not to vote for an inexperienced person.
“If you vote a new person, the fellow is now going to learn the rudiments of parliament. Can someone bully Teye-Nyaunu in parliament?’’ he asked.
Teye-Nyaunu has been a Member of Parliament since 1996 after former PNDC secretary Major (rtd) Ted Tetteh.
