Two friends in a time of famine hatched a plan to ration their last morsels of food to extend their chances of survival. Let's call them Kwame and Kwesi. Now the first meal which was shared by these two was Kwesi's last meal but it took adequate care of the two's need. The next meal time came, Kwesi looked forward to sharing Kwame's food but Kwame had other plans. He had hid his food and refused to share it.
That's not so nice you say, and I bet some of you may have a few choice words to describe Kwame.
My friends, I suggest to you that many of us are no different from the second chap - Kwame. The two friends represent two generations in our nation's history, Kwesi is the generation that won us independence; they gave their time, energy, resources and life to build a nation. Kwame is the generation that inherited an independent Ghana, too busy with each building a nest egg for themselves alone. Yet we stop to question why Ghana is not the great nation that it once was.
Who will build the Ghana that you desire?
If our focus is solely on our needs and desires then when we will be able to stop and do something for our family, neighborhood or community, let alone our nation? How are we sharing the time, energy, resources and the gifts that have been placed within us to affect the destiny of those who take over from us.
Yesterday on the Super Morning Show we talked about patriotism and I couldn't help but wonder whether we truly love our dear nation Ghana. I am however confident that it's not all doom and gloom. There are green shoots of hope around us. Consider for a moment the story of man who once was a deputy director of the Ghana Education Service but now finds himself behind bars for murder but has refused to let his knowledge and expertise rot away in jail. He has started a program that teaches basic education to inmates of the Nsawam Prison with successful outcomes.
Many of us today have our freedoms intact, all of us have gifts, talents and skills but how are we affecting the lives of the people around us? We cannot change Ghana if we hide ourselves from the service of the nation with our character, time, energy, gifts and resources. Jonge Kwame Akwatia is doing his bit even as he serves a life sentence in prison.
Like Kwesi, if we share with our world what we have, we would have extended our journey of progress. Together we CAN build, Together we MUST build, Together LET US build. Like I said, I will die for Ghana one day at a time in every sphere of my life. We are the chosen generation, Let us build our nation and make her great and strong. WE ARE ALL INVOLVED.
I am Nhyira Addo, The Rainmaker.
Go Forward, Make Rain
Shalom
