A Reverend Minister has charged politicians to shed the culture of lies which he said has saturated their political activities. According to Col David Asare lies have become so endemic to politicians the only truth they say is good morning. He was speaking at the burial ceremony of the former Keta MP, Squadron leader Clend Sowu who was laid to rest on Friday. Mr Sowu died peacefully in his sleep on December 4, 2010. Politicians across the political divide, including ex-President Rawlings, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey had gathered to bid farewell to a compatriot but they received a rare bashing from the officiating minister who minced no words in his description of politicians as pathological liars. He said politicians admit “lying is part of the game,” and sometimes ask God for forgiveness even in the middle of a hot lie on a campaign platform. “Osofo at times speaking the truth can cost you vote” one of the politicians confided in him, he said. “At times when I am talking to the people, whilst I am lying to them I’m saying in my head God forgive me,” the politician confessed. He charged the politicians to say what they mean and mean what they say. For the sake of trust he said politicians must beware of the quality of the promises they make. “I am begging the politicians that they shouldn’t let lying look normal because it is a pathological issue that you see something white and you say it is black,” he said. According to him for some of the politicians the only truth they speak is good morning. “After good morning any other statements beware; think twice before you accept it,” he cautioned electorates. Chairman of the NPP, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey said politicians are just like job hunters and so electorates have the power to deny any lying politician the right to a job. Chairman of the NDC on the other hand said there is a perception that politicians are liars, adding they must work to erase that perception.
