The carnage on Ghanaian roads that seemed to have receded into the New Year shot back violently on Thursday morning, with a horrifying scene at Asutuare Junction on the Tema-Akosombo road.
In a dawn accident involving a heavy-duty tipper truck and a passenger Benz bus, 14 souls perished while four others were left in critical conditions.
The four were sent to the Akuse Government Hospital.
Chief Superintendent Emmanuel Bosso, the Akuse District Police Commander who got to the scene minutes after the accident said preliminary investigation showed the white tipper truck with registration number AS 7175 X which was headed for a nearby Obobloase limestone quarry, veered off course and lunged head-on into the advancing bus.
The Benz bus with registration number GT 2933 H was heading from Hohoe in the Volta Region to Tema with workers and market women.
On impact, the huge tipper truck submerged the bus, ripping its roofing completely and gnawing into all on board.
The bloody clash left several limbs and other body parts spattered on the road, and while travelers early to chance upon the carnage were ready to assist convey those they said had some life in them to nearby hospitals, they were unable to do so.
The bus was so mangled it virtually wrapped up its passengers in the rubble.
A team of military, police and Fire Service personnel, aided by travelers and others from the locality struggled with cutting implements before freeing the bodies.
Many who witnessed the extremely distressing scene could not help breaking down in tears, while others volunteered that the State ought to do more than education to restore some sanity on the roads.
