The General secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Musah has asked the Controller and Accountant General's Department (CAGD) to direct its threats of no salary to government and not the workers.

According to Mr. Thomas Musah, the 'threat' of the CAGD not to pay government workers is baseless and not right.

Speaking on Joy FM's NewsNight with Evans Mensah, on Thursday, Mr. Thomas Musah stated that, the CAGD could have gone about this in a different way because the workers are not on their own.

“This is the exercise we want to do so please mobilize your people for us and so with the time schedule and the collaboration of NIA, you get labour unions involved and you mobilize the people so wherever you go we come together then we have shared responsibility to get this thing done”

The CAGD in the view of Mr. Thomas Musah has rather turned its attention to employees who do not function on their own instead of the employers who can give them permission to go to the NIA and get their Ghana card done.

In this regard, Mr. Musah wants the Minister of Finance to call the CAGD to order because it is not right.

The spokesperson for CAGD, Cephas Dosu has however stated emphatically that, it will not change its position on the matter and that all government workers who do not acquire their Ghana card by December 1st are automatically saying goodbye to their salary.

Mr. Musah in response to this stated that, “don’t worry, you let him try us, we will meet him and we will respond appropriately, he should mark our words we will respond.”

He added that, it was not a one man show and so the CAGD cannot threaten the employee when the employee needs permission from the employer.

The CAGD on October 12, 2021 announced its decision to withhold salaries of government workers who do not possess the Ghana Card.

According to the CAGD the decision which will take effect from December 1, 2021 is to deliver speedy, secured and verified payroll services to government employees and pensioners while reducing the risk of undeserving payments or claims.

President of NAGRAT earlier stated that the directive by the CAGD is absolutely wrong and must be reversed.
