The Chief Justice, Georgina Wood, has recommended three Justices from the Appeals Court for promotion to the Supreme Court.
This was contained in a letter to President Mills. Justice Georgina Wood said the vacancies have to be filled to enhance the administration of justice as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.
Justice Wood recommends Justice B.T. Aryeetey, Justice S.N. Gbadegbe and Justice Vida Akoto-Bamfo for promotion to the Supreme Court.
The Chief Justice said the Judicial Council at its meeting on August 12, 2009, approved the recommendations.
The nominations have become necessary after the death of Justice Professor Tawiah Modibo Ocran, retirement of Justice Theodore Adzoe both in October last year, and the resignation of Justice Francis Y. Kpegah in December.
There are currently 11 Justices at the Supreme Court, including the Chief Justice.
While in opposition, the NDC proposed a limit on the number of Justices to the Supreme Court.
There have been questions regarding why the administration is approving more considering that there are 11 Justices already and the constitutional requirement of at least nine considered to be well within control.
But speaking to Joy FM on Thursday, Attorney-General Betty Mould-Iddrisu dismissed suggestions the NDC advocating for a ceiling meant maintaining the current number.
Mrs Mould-Iddrisu hinted the ministry is meeting with donors next week to source funding for such changes in the judiciary.
The A-G also disclosed that following the movement of the three Judges to the highest court of the land, her ministry would look to promoting some High Court Judges to fill the vacancies.
