Police at Manso Nkwanta in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region, have gunned down three suspected armed robbers following a gun battle with a police patrol team, Wednesday dawn.
The robbers, five in number were said to have blocked the Manso-Kensere-Adubia road in an attempt to rob the travelling public at about 3 a.m.
Members of the gang who had then alighted from an Opel taxi cab opened fire on the police patrol team who were on routine patrol duties.
A release signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, ASP Juliana Obeng said three suspected robbers were killed in the ensuing gun-battle with the police team whilst two managed to escaped in the Opel taxi cab.
“Just as the patrol team got to the scene, they chanced on an Opel Taxi Cab with five (5) men who alighted from it. The occupants on seeing the Police opened fire on them as the personnel also returned”, the statement said.
Later, one of the suspected robbers was lynched by residents of Kensere, bringing the number of deceased to four.
Police later retrieved a single-barrelled gun, locally manufactured pistols and spent ammunition shells from the robbers.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the suspects have been deposited at the St. Martin Catholic Hospital's morgue at Agroyesum.
