An exercise to register butchers in the Tema Municipality is underway to clamp down on unscrupulous butchers who sell unwholesome meat to the public.Peter Amuzu, Chief Environmental Health Officer of the Tema Municipal Assembly, who disclosed this to the Ghanaian Times said by the end of May a special task force would be set up to visit all meat shops to fish out all unregistered butchers. He said all operators of unregistered butcheries would be prosecuted.He said a survey conducted by his outfit and reports from the butchers association confirmed that some people have established meat shops without approval.So far, about 50 butchers have registered with the department, Mr. Amuzu said but expressed the hope that by the close of the week, a lot more would have registered.As part of the month long exercise, butchers would be issued with medical health certificates and licenses to operate.Credit: Ghanaian Times
