Students of education colleges are in a dilemma as academic activities have grinded to a halt and exams indefinitely suspended because of the strike action embarked on by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG).
Some students of the Accra College of Education who spoke to Joy News on Multitv say they are supposed to have started their exams which will have ended next week.
According to them, tutors are unwilling to invigilate because of the on-going industrial action which seeks to ensure that colleges of education are elevated to tertiary status.
The students expressed fear that they may have to go home and resume next academic year for their exams as it is rumored.
Paul Krampa, Public Relations Officer of the Education Ministry says the Ministry is doing everything necessary to elevate education colleges to tertiary status in accordance with the colleges of education bill passed last year.
In an interview with Joy News Joy News he said the association had a meetings with the Deputy Minister of Education, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa last week.
Mr. Krampa expressed surprise at the industrial action since, at the meeting with the Deputy Education Minister, the association was made to understand that structures are in place to ensure their elevation.
He added that, a technical committee composed of officials from the Education Ministry, Ghana Education Service, Colleges of Education and Universities have presented a report to the Ministry which bothers on conditions of service of members of the association.
The report, he says, will guide the process of elevation as it has been forwarded to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.
He continued that; the structures are carefully being put in place to avert lapses when the bill has been fully implemented.
Paul Krampa assured CETAG their grievances will soon be addressed and advised the principals of colleges of education to explain to tutors to exercise restraint.
He said “anything worth doing is worth done well.”
