Executive Secretary to a former Inspector General of Police (IGP) has urged the Police Service to take urgent measures to flush out corrupt officers.

Peter Lanchene Toobu noted that considering how some persons illegally get recruitment into the Service, this is bound to happen.

“The police service is such that if you are not qualified to be there and you find your way to be there through other means, the system will expose you out, and you’ll be exposed. Today, these young men have been gotten by the system, and if it is proven that they were involved, they will be flush out of the system,” he said.

The Wa MP's comment follows a statement by the Service that two police officers were allegedly involved in two bullion van robbery attacks in the Greater Accra Region.

These bullion van robberies occurred in the first half of 2021.

"The investigations are continuing, and we expect to bring all culpable people to justice soon,” the statement added.

Mr Toobu served under David Asante Apeatu from 2017 until he resigned and retired from the Service to go into Politics in 2019.

Speaking on JOYNEWS' The Pulse on Tuesday, the Wa West MP noted that he is not surprised about the recent report disclosed by the Police.

According to Peter Toobu, the situation is just “a tip of the iceberg”, and many more officers may be involved in crime in the country.

He urged the Ghana Police to treat the issue as a prevalent phenomenon and urgently devise mechanisms to address it.

“One criminal in Police uniform is more dangerous than hundred armed robbers. Therefore, one criminal detected wearing a police uniform should be treated as a pandemic, and we should take it seriously.

"This is not the first time; it is neither the last time we are going to see this; we need to rise to do something about it,” he stated.

He said the Police Service must engage in a complete reform to weed out the Service's corrupt officers.

In a statement on Monday signed by the Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng, disclosed that they have made a breakthrough in the investigations into the multiple bullion van robberies in the Greater Accra Region.

These bullion van robberies occurred in the first half of 2021.

“Preliminary investigations have established the involvement of two policemen among a number of other suspects. The investigations are continuing, and we expect to bring all culpable people to justice soon,” the statement added.
