The Executive Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative, Mary Addah, says there must be trust among Ghanaians that the judicial system will address every issue without compromise.
This stems from an allegation made by Richard Jakpa, an accused person standing trial alongside Dr Cassiel Ato Forson for allegedly causing a financial loss of €2.37 million to the state in an ambulance deal.
Mr Jakpa claimed in court that Mr Dame had repeatedly sought his assistance to implicate Dr Forson in the ongoing trial.
At a press conference on Tuesday, NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia played a secret recording of the AG and Jakpa, warning that if the president does not heed their demands, a future NDC government will take action.
Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show, Mrs. Addah stated that “For us, one of the things we expect is that, when issues are before the court, the most salient issue is the issue of fairness because that is where we can get justice and then trust that the system will deal with each and every issue without any compromise."
"So we expect the Attorney-General to prosecute, and the defence lawyers and accused would also then set their agenda and come out there to defend themselves with the best possible evidence they have to support their case and the Attorney-General doing same."
Mrs Addah, emphasised that the court is expected to be a place where justice is impartially applied.
She expressed concern over reports of behind-the-scenes issues and stated that such practices should not be encouraged.
Mrs Addah highlighted that Ghana prides itself on being a thriving democracy, serving as a model for the rest of Africa and urged that any actions undermining this reputation should be firmly condemned.
“No matter what the intentions are. For us, we want to promote trust in our systems; we want to make people feel that when they go to court, it is the court that will disperse justice, not people doing things behind the scenes," he noted.
