Asamoah Gyan has taken strong exception to increasing suggestions that he is a financial for political parties in Ghana.
The latest one came on Wednesday, suggesting that the Black Stars captain is a major donor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in a quest to see them dethrone the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in this year's impending polls.
Accra-based Muntie FM, a predominantly local language station - and part of the stable that includes Radio Gold and TV Gold - took centre stage on Wednesday afternoon when a popular presenter accused the player of partaking in party politics.
The presenter, popularly called Mugabe (real name Mugabe Maase), drew a pattern of NPP-related activity by the player, who invited Nana Akuffo Addo last June to the opening of his $3 million home in Accra.
The reporter also suggested that Gyan had imported shipping containers full of cutlasses and other agricultural products from his China base to be given to potential voters - especially in farming communities - to convince them to vote NPP.
Gyan took to Twitter at almost the same time as the program was live: “Say no to irresponsible journalism, the owners or managers of Muntie FM must call their journalists to order”, he began.
“I'm a footballer and not a politician. I serve Ghana not politicians or [political] parties. I don't fund politics, there's more joy in charity and philanthropy and my works are my evidence.
“Journalism is a noble profession, say no to irresponsible Journalism. Hate can't win, get a life and God will bless you,” he added.
