The Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology is collaborating with the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing to formulate a policy, that will ensure forty percent of local raw materials are used in all construction works.Speaking at the launch of the 1st National Eco-Communities Framework in Accra, the Environment Minister, Sherry Ayittey said, the policy will help to build a strong local economy while encouraging dealers of such local products to take advantage of the vast local raw materials such as clay available in the country.She decried the over-reliance on foreign materials in the building sector noting, the country had clay deposits that could last for up to 3000 years.She said the two ministries are currently preparing a policy framework that will be presented to Parliament before the end of the year to ensure the usage of the 40 percent local raw materials in the building sector is enforced.Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Dr. Hannah Bisiw indicated government will collaborate with the Ghana Green Building Council, framers of the eco-communities initiative to help establish communities that are environmentally friendly in the country.Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Green Building Council, Foster Osae-Akonnor said the national eco-communities framework is part to help reduce the impact of climate change in the country.The national eco-communities framework he noted will facilitate stakeholder engagement during the evolution of eco-communities and encourage innovation and excellence in our approach to creating sound eco-communities in the future.
