Two out of four suspected armed robbers were killed when they exchanged fire with the police after they had robbed passengers on board a bus at Banu, near Tumu in the Sissala East District in the Upper West Region.
The identities of the robbers are yet to be established. According to the Upper Regional Crime Officer, DSP Daniel Kwentwi, the four suspected robbers had attacked a Tumu-bound Metro Mass Transit bus at Banu.
The robbers took away personal effects of the travellers and subjected them to inhuman treatment.
However, a passenger managed to make a distress call to a private radio station, Radford FM, which in turn informed the police.
When the police got to the scene, the robbers had bolted, but they mounted a search for the robbers and fortunately saw them on two motorbikes at Banu.
According to DSP Kwentwi, when the police ordered the suspected robbers to stop, they refused and rather opened fire on the police.
In the ensuing exchange of fire, one of the suspects was shot dead, while another was found dead, with gunshot wounds, in the bush nearby.
Two policemen were said to have sustained gunshot wounds.
DSP Kwentwi said a search on the bodies of the deceased led to the discovery of locally made weapons and sums of money in cedis and CFA.
The police suspect that the money found on the robbers might have been taken from the passengers on the bus.
