There is an uneasy calm in Bawku in the Upper East region following reprisal attacks between the two rival ethnic groups, the Mamprusis and Kusasis.
Bawku Police Commander ACP Kweku Boadu Peprah confirmed the attacks in an interview with Joy News on Monday.
A Kusasi man, Seidu Iddrisu was attacked by persons alleged to be Mamprusis on Sunday night on his return from visiting his hospitalized wife.
He told Joy News two persons crossed his motorbike, seized it and inflicted cutlass wounds on him. They also beat him with sticks, he narrated.
He said several cries for help fell on deaf ears as the men continued their assault.
ACP Peprah confirmed the attack but stated that a Mamprusi man was also attacked by persons said to be from the Kusasi stock, last Thursday.
Bawku has been a hotspot for years with the two ethnic groups maiming and killing each other as well as torching houses and properties.
Peprah assured that the perpetrators will be arrested and prosecuted.
“We are investigating this matter especially the one which happened yesterday. It is not true that it is only the Kusasis that have been attacked. Last Thursday, a Kusasi man attacked a Mamprusi man. Day and night patrols are ongoing.
“What we will do for peace to prevail in Bawku is to arrest the offenders and put them before court,” he stated.
Meanwhile, an opinion leader, Stephen Atubiga has urged the Member of Parliament, Adamu Dramani to condemn the acts of violence.
