The widow of the teacher, who was murdered in Asiakwa has appealed to the government to help her take care of her children.

According to Madam Adwoa Asieduwaa, it will be impossible to take care of all her three children including a four months old baby, alone.

George Somuah Bosompem was a teacher at the Salvation Army Basic School at Asiakwa in the Eastern region who was reportedly beaten to death by some youth in the area for warning them to desist from defeating on the school compound.

But another teacher of the school, speaking on condition of anonymity, has recanted that account.

Speaking to Joy News’ Maxwell Kudekor from the residence of the widow, the teacher said the attack on the Religious and Moral Education teacher was a revenge attack.

According to him, the school has a snail farm which was encroached on by some youth in the community. These teenagers also use the school compound for nefarious activities such as wee smoking and illicit sex. The miscreants, he said, stole snails from the school’s farm.

Upon police complaints, arrests were made but instead of prosecutions some opinion leaders intervened and the suspects were made to pay for the cost of the snails stolen from the farm.

Angered by the arrests and forced payments, the youth vowed to revenge and while assaulting the late teacher, the perpetrators reminded him that they were exacting their pound of flesh.

The assault has rendered madam Asieduwaa a widow.

She first heard of the attack on her husband through a distress call from the hospital asking her to bring the husbands health insurance card, she narrated to Joy News. 

The deceased was initially admitted to the Kibi Hospital but later transferred to the St Joseph's Hospital.

Amidst tears, Madam Asieduwaa told Joy News she is helpless and urgently needs help to take care of her children.

Her oldest child received the news of the father’s death while still writing his WASSCE.

She has a second child who is now four years and the last who is just four months old.

 Her income from her petty trading is woefully inadequate to give the children the kind of future she envisages for them and wants urgent help. She believes if nothing is done the future of the children is likely to be jeopardized.

The minister of education has since visited the widow and has promised the government’s help and assistance.

The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa has issued a statement commiserating with the family. 

"The Director-General and management of the GES have learned with shock and disbelief the killing of Mr. Bosompem. Management strongly condemns in no uncertain terms the killing of 55-year old Mr. Bosompem, who has been described by his local Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) as a very calm and reserved man,” the statement issued Saturday said.  

Meanwhile, the six accused persons are scheduled to appear in court today.

Five of them were put before the Kibi District Magistrate Court and were remanded into police custody to reappear on May 14, 2019.

The five are facing provisional charges of conspiracy to commit murder and murder. They are Richard Amaning, 18; Mireku Emmanuel, 17; Philip Okodie, 17; Paul Boadu, 18, and Ezekiel Boadu, 19.

A sixth suspect, Aboagye Evans was picked up from his hideout last week Friday.

The Salvation Army Basic School has since been closed down temporarily.
