The Adabraka District Court has adjourned to April 16, 2026, the case involving Gifty Oppong, a policewoman accused of shooting and killing a taxi driver at Tetegu.
When the case was called, the accused was not present in court.
The prosecution informed the court that Gifty Oppong was in lawful custody but had not been brought before it, and therefore, prayed for a new date.
Defence counsel, Mr Raymond Felli, expressed dissatisfaction with his client’s absence, describing the situation as unfortunate.
He noted that no proceedings were conducted despite his presence in court and requested that costs be awarded, stating, “We cannot come here and there would be no business.”
Some family members of the deceased, who had travelled long distances to attend the hearing, also expressed disappointment over the adjournment and the absence of the accused.
They further lamented the slow pace of the judicial process.
Oppong is alleged to have shot and killed Edward Awuku Owusu, also known as Papa Kwesi, following a confrontation.
She has been charged with murder but has not yet entered a plea. The court has remanded her into lawful custody.
The incident reportedly occurred on January 19, 2026, in the Tetegu area near Weija in Accra.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that the victim was rushed to the Police Hospital after the shooting but was pronounced dead on arrival.
A police statement also noted that the accused sustained injuries to her head and both legs after being hit by a vehicle while attempting to leave the scene.
She was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment.
Exhibits retrieved from the scene included one live 9mm round, a magazine, and one empty 9mm cartridge.
