The Ministry of Health has taken delivery of medical equipment and supplies worth $250 million for use by Midwifery Training Schools in the country. The items were donations from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) under a midwifery programme in collaboration with the International Confederation of Midwives. Under the programme, the UNFPA provides technical and material resources to strengthen midwifery activities in 22 countries including Ghana. It is intended to reduce maternal mortality. Minister of Health, Alban Bagbin received the equipment from the UNFPA Country Midwifery Advisor, Fredrica Enyonam Hanson at a ceremony in Tema. The Minister said government was considering the strengthening of teaching institutions to build the capacity to deliver quality health care for our mothers and our children. He hoped the initiative will propel the country to meet targets set in the Millennium Development Goals. The President of the Ghana Registered Midwives Association, Joyce Jetuah was grateful to the UNFPA for the gesture.
